HOW TO GET TO ABRUZZO |
BY PLANE
There are three main airports from where you can get to Abruzzo, two in Rome and one in Pescara.
- Pescara’s Airport (Abruzzo international airport) is located in Abruzzo and it is served by low-cost flights such as Ryan Air. The airport is located 3km from the city Pescara. You can fly direct to Abruzzo from many European cities such as London, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, Bucharest, Frankfurt, Eindhoven, Oslo, Prague and Tirana.
- Abruzzo is an easy destination for travelers arriving at the Fiumicino and/or Ciampino airport in Rome. They are well connected by several bus companies that everyday have bus ride almost each hour. In 2 hours an a half you'll arrive in Pescara and from there by bus or train you can reach other destinations. So if you plan a trip to Abruzzo you may take advantage of the many flights arriving in Rome.

BY BUS
Abruzzo and especially Pescara is connected to many Italian and European towns by bus. If you arrive at the International Airport of Fiumicino or Ciampino you may find comfortable to reach Pescara by bus and than from Pescara arrange your short transfer to your final destination. Generally the buses are double deck and equipped with free WI-FI. Almost all of the company allow to by the ticket on the bus or directly on line. During seasons the buses are often fully booked, so it's better if you reserve your seat in advance. Below you'll find the link to the main companies running rides from/to Rome.
HOW TO GET TO L'AQUILA
From Rome (FIUMICINO AIRPORT)
- Express coaches departing right from the Fiumicino Airport and operated by Gaspari or Flixbus.
- Coach service operated by T.U.A. (aka as A.R.P.A.), Gaspari or Flixbus departinf from the "Tiburtina train station" (Please find below more information*) in East Rome. This means, you'll have to firstly catch a train from the airport to get there, which will take you one hour at least. So, we strongly suggest you use option A above.
- The Fiumicino Airport is connected to Tiburtina Station by local trains, runing from 6 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. every 20 minutes
- Duration: around 50 minutes
- Ticket cost is 8.00 euro
- Note that using a taxi from the airport to Tiburtina is very expensive (you may be charged even more than 50 euro!)
- In order to catch a train to Tiburtina after getting off your plane at Fiumicino Airport, just follow the signs to the Train Station (it is located inside the airport).
From Rome (CIAMPINO AIRPORT)
- Express coaches departing right from the Ciampino Airport and operated by Gaspari.
- Coach service operated by T.U.A. (aka as ARPA), Gaspari or Flixbus departing from the "Tiburtina train station" (Please find below more information**) in East Rome. This will take you more than one hour, so we strongly suggest you use option A above.
** How to get to Tiburtina station from Ciampino Airport
- You'll find different buses parked right outside the arrival terminal (Ciampino airport is quite small, btw): ask the driver or look at the display on the bus. Your destination is Anagnina (it is the name of an underground - metro station). Tickets can be bought on the bus (price is around 1 EUR).
- After reaching the Anagnina metro station, get off the bus, walk down the steps and enter the underground station (you will see an "M" (metro) on the signs).
- Buy a ticket (around 1.5 euro): there are self-service machines or desks.
- From Anagnina there is only one underground line (line A). Get off at Termini (the main train station in Rome, btw).
- Now change trains and take the metro line B, bound for Rebibbia. Your destination is Tiburtina (only 4 stops).
From PESCARA AIRPORT
From the Airport you can hire a taxi, it will take 10 minutes’ drive to Pescara centre or you can catch the bus, which is a cheaper way to get to Pescara centre (catch bus number 8 or 38). Single trip € 1,10. Duration: around 20 minutes. Tickets can be bought from automatic machines or desks. The bus will take you to Piazza della Repubblica in Pescara, a large square in front of "Pescara centrale" train station. Buy a ticket for L'Aquila at the ticket office (biglietteria in Italian) you will find at the bottom of the square. A ticket costs around 14 euros. Duration: around 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Alternatively, you can catch a train, which is definetely cheaper (around 7 EUR) but you'll have to change trains at Sulmona (a town between Pescara and L'Aquila), so the whole journey could take you almost 3 hours.
