- Individual arrival in Siena. Meet and greet with our staff, briefing and orientation. We suggest you to take your time to visit the city center of Siena, a real journey back in time, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, in a context that was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Dinner on your own and overnight in 3-star hotel or hotel/residence with swimming pool. Upgrade to 4-star hotel is available on request with extra charge.
- BUONCONVENTO AND MONTALCINO (55 km – Elevation gain: 1080 meters). Leaving Siena, yoll cycle through the gentle hills of the Val d'Arbia up to Ville di Corsano, coming across the route of L'Eroica and the small village of Murlo. Then you'll continue downhill to Buonconvento, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, where you can stop for lunch in one of the restaurants in the town centre. Finally, you'll cycle uphill to Montalcino, a medieval town surrounded by fine vineyards and home of Brunello wine. Take the chance to stop at one of the wine cellars along the way and enjoy a glas of wine before reaching your destination. An alternative route will allow you to cycle, in the first part of the stage, on dirt roads along the Eroica and pass through the typical countryside of the Val d'Arbia. - SANT'ANTIMO ABBEY AND VAL D'ORCIA (48 km – elevation gain: 1040 meters). Today's stage will lead you through the heart of the Val d'Orcia, one of the most evocative places in all Tuscany and UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll visit the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Tuscany; the towns of Castiglione d'Orcia and Rocca d'Orcia; Bagno Vignoni, a pretty medieval village, well known for its thermal bath and hot springs; San Quirico d'Orcia, one of the most distinctive villages of the Val d'Orcia, with its historic centre full of bars, restaurants and small shops. Before arriving in Pienza, you can admire the famous Vitaleta Chapel, one of the most photographed churches in Tuscany. Once in Pienza, don't miss the chance to walk through the town centre up to the panoramic terrace from which you can admire the entire Val d'Orcia. Dinner on your own and overnight in 4-star hotel.
- CRETE SENESI REGION TO CHIANTI (55 km - Elevation gain: 800 meters). Today's first stop is the monastery of Sant'Anna in Camprena, where the movie 'The English Patient' was filmed. Cycling through the beautiful landscape of The Crete Senesi, between ravines and biancane, you'll reach first Castelmuzio and then Montisi, small villages far from mass tourism. Your itinerary continues towards San Giovanni d'Asso, where you can visit the Truffle Museum that offers visitors a multi-sensory experience in and around the white truffle. After a brief stop in Asciano, small town rich in churches and museums, the landscape will start to change, vineyards will take over from the clay soil: you are in Chianti region.
We suggest you to walk to Cantina Felsina, located just outside the centre of Castelnuovo Berardenga, where you can taste the famous Chianti wine. Dinner on your own and overnight in 4-star hotel or typical Tuscan farmhouse. - CHIANTI AND THE BROLIO CASTLE - (48 km - Elevation gain: 950 meters). Today's stage runs along the Chianti area. You'll visit small jewels such as Castelnuovo Berardenga, Villa a Sesta, San Gusmè. Before heading to Gaiole in Chianti, where L'Eroica was born in 1997, you will have the opportunity to visit the Castle of Brolio, dating back to the 11th century and owned by the Ricasoli family since 1141. Then, you'll cycle to Radda in Chianti, small medieval village full of narrow streets and beautiful views over the vineyards and perfect place to stop for lunch and enjoy the charming atmosphere of the Chianti region.
Finally you'll reach Castellina in Chianti. Dinner on your own and overnight in 3-star hotel. - SAN DONATO, CERTALDO AND SAN GIMIGNANO (50 km - Elevation gain: 680 meters). Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, you'll pass through the towns of San Donato in Poggio, Tavarnelle, Certaldo, best known for being the birthplace of the poet Boccaccio. If you want, a small detour can take you to Certaldo Alta, where the oldest part of the village is located. Then, you'll continue uphill to San Gimignano, a medieval town famous for its beautiful towers. Thanks to the strategic location of the hotel, situated in the main square of San Gimignano, you will have the opportunity to visit the last UNESCO site of this trip: the historical centre of San Gimignano. - ABBADIA ISOLA AND MONTERIGGIONI (49 km - Elevation gain: 680 meters). A long descent will take you out of San Gimignano. You'll reach Colle Val d'Elsa, the city of crystal. Today's destination is Monteriggioni with its iconic town walls. Situated on a gentle hill that dominates the countryside below, the town is literally on the Via Francigena route and this is the reason why the surrounding lands are characterised by parish churches, big houses and small towns. Along the way don't miss the opportunity to visit Abbadia Isola. The Abbey was a shelter which hosted travellers on their way to Rome. Dinner on your own and accommodation in 3-star hotel or hotel/residence with swimming pool. Upgrade to 4-star hotel is available on request with extra charge.
